Does he moan while sleeping? Why Do Dogs Groan When They Lie Down? All these questions can be answered by looking that these medical reasons that might stimulate a dog to groan while laying down: Panosteitis / Puppy Growing Pains This disease occurs due to side effects on knee surgery, an inactive work life and the effects of ageing. It can even be caused due to aches and pains during puppy hood. Growing pains affects puppies along with some medium, large and giant breed dogs. In this disease the bones tend to grow more swiftly than they can physically align. This disease can happen in any young dog younger than 2 years of age, but it is more prevalent in German Shepherd puppies. Groaning when laying down or getting up is the least atrocious symptoms of this disease. It can even cause lameness, limping or hesitant use of either of the forelegs resulting in a protective doggy bark when you touch him. You can hear painful groans along with physical discomfort in growing dogs. The pain is rather inconvenient in puppies, but it is time bound. The peculiar thing about this disease is that it can appear suddenly and then disappear for weeks. It can even switch from one leg to another during the puppy's first 18 to 24 months. Watch out for tenderness in upper forelegs especially if you have a German Shepherd, Basset Hounds, Doberman Pinschers, Golden and Labrador Retrievers, Great Danes and Rottweilers. Even over-exercising your puppy can result in hip dysplasia during the later part of his life. This is the very reason that dog owners recommend not to run young puppies for an extended period of time till they turn approximately 18 months of age. What Does It Mean When A Dog Groans Or Sighs? Arthritis This disease is more common in ageing dogs, but even hip dysplasia can make it difficult for the dog to get up or lay down. Older dogs find it difficult to move and develop signs like osteoarthritis, a degenerative tissue, causing the cartilage, that cushions the major joints; begin to wear out. Groaning while settling on the bed is one of the symptoms of an ageing dog suffering from joint pain. Some symptoms of this disease include: limping while resting and refusing to climb the stairs or going down, biting, licking or chewing the affected joints excessively, resulting in groaning, and leading a sedentary life. Giant dog breeds are normally affected by arthritis. If your doggy is obese, it can result in a lot of pressure on his limbs resulting in osteoarthritis. Hence, it is extremely critical to maintain good feeding habits and regular exercise regime for the pet. Ascites This disease causes excessive buildup of fluid in the abdomen of dogs causing them to groan while laying down in a resting position. Your doggy will undergo intense physical and behavioral changes with age that will more detrimental than the noticeable signs and groans. If your pooch used to enjoy a good belly rub, but right now the same activity makes him feel uncomfortable then ascites can be the culprit. In large breed dogs with a typically large stomach watch out for symptoms like vomiting and difficulty in breathing. It also results in immense pressure that builds up on the dog's internal organs like lungs that results in abnormal moaning and groaning as the dog struggles to find relief. There is no single symptom but there are far more intricate internal problem or dysfunction that requires veterinary attention and care. This disease can occur in dogs of any age, resulting in sudden physical injury like running or bumping into a piece of furniture during play. In senior dogs it can cause internal bleeding due to kidney or liver damage, cancerous growth or congestive heart failure. If your dog's stomach appears to be remarkably tight, then it might be a case where he is experiencing some discomfort and make require veterinary attention for the correct course of action.
