A feline in her life cycle battles with many enemies (not other animals but her own health issues). Out of these, the most common one which your kitty may have to deal with is chronic skin problems, which at times is a great source of discomfort for her. Fleas are responsible for common skin issues in cats and if not controlled, can lead to Flea Allergy Dermatitis. Similarly, skin infections arising due to fungus or bacteria can prove to be a worrying point for cat parents. Not to mention, cat skin is highly vulnerable to extreme weather and accidental injury.
Take a note of a few major Skin Issues in Cats Flea Allergy Dermatitis Characterized by itchy bumps on the cat’s body, this skin condition requires urgent treatment. The disease is due to the reaction of fleas present on the cat’s skin. The feline starts reacting to flea saliva by itching and continuous scratching. Hair loss is the side effect of this skin condition. It surfaces on felines, who are not protected by flea preventives. A cat dealing with this skin condition first has to get rid of fleas present on her body followed by a full flea protection treatment. Products like Frontline Plus or Bravecto Spot on are found to be effective in treating this menace. Ear Mites The tiny little pests can make your cat ears their resting place. These microscopic parasites cause great itching sensation in your cat’s ears. A feline housing these ear mites would be seen shaking her head and scratching off her ears. To get rid of these mites, pour few drops of ear cleansing solution like Epi-Otic and clean your cat’s ear with cotton ball. Feline Acne This is a skin condition identified as pimples around the cat’s chin. It is often associated with plastic bowl given to cat for meal. Other factors which might cause this condition in cats include stress, neglect of cat’s grooming requirements, etc. A cat parent in this regard should get a vet recommended shampoo, which can prove to be effective in removing excess oils from her skin. This will help to lower feline acne. Ringworm A serious skin condition - ringworm is a type of fungal infection, which leads to circular lesions around a feline’s ear, nose or head. The affected area would appear naked or bald with signs of hair loss around the area. It is highly contagious and pet parents are advised to consult a vet at the earliest to treat this skin condition. Allergic Contact Dermatitis If you notice something uncommon in your cat’s behavior and on the surface everything seems fine to you, then some hidden irritant might be troubling your cat with itching or persistent scratching symptom. This uncommon reaction in your cat can be due to allergy towards a particular food or a reaction to a medication. The only way to deal with this problem is to find the factors or irritants, which are causing your cat to behave in this way. Once they are spotted, the same can be eliminated from your cat’s environment. If you are unable to determine the underlying factors for this skin condition in your cat, vet visit is the only option to exercise. Skin issues in felines differ in varying degree, depending on the severity of the skin condition. The crux of the matter here is to consult your vet immediately, if you find any sign on your cat skin.
