Dogs have the habit of munching around on any stuff that comes their way. It can be tricky for them to decide what things to gorge on and what not to gulp down their ever hungry throat. This makes it hard for pet owners to keep track of what possibly could have caused vomiting in their pet. Sometimes, it is just because of eating something that didn’t work well for their system, for instance, grass or spoiled food. However, if the vomit is continuous and due to some underlying serious health issues or the dog has ingested the toxin, it is a cause for concern and calls for an emergency.
Moreover, some people mistake regurgitation with vomiting. Regurgitation is simply throwing up or backflow of undigested food or liquid that never reached the stomach. However, vomiting is different. It is a forceful throw up of contents that were already present in the stomach. When Does Vomiting Become a Concern? Even water can initiate vomiting so better if you wait for 12 hours straight. You can resume feeding your dog after this time period but go slow. You shouldn’t force him or expect him to eat out of the bowl. Furthermore, sometimes the presence of ticks in dogs can cause severe tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease or Anaplasmosis, etc which lead to vomiting and other fatal symptoms in dogs. Therefore, it is important to provide tick preventatives beforehand. Whatsoever the situation, you must not panic. Wait, and keep an eye on your dog. If he is good after one vomit, he doesn’t require any medical help. Only when he has ingested something toxic or is throwing up continuously would you need to call the vet. Hope, now you know what to do if the dog throws up and when you actually need to worry.
