So what are the preventive treatment options for heartworm in dogs? Let us look at some of the top heartworm preventive treatments that have been tailor-made for dogs: Heartworm Preventative Treatments for Dogs Heartgard Plus Heartgard Plus is one of the most popular heartworm preventive treatments available for dogs. This tasty chewable has a palatable taste which makes even the fussiest eater to have it. This monthly treatment is recommended for dogs more than 6 weeks of age. Veterinarians in our country recommend to administer this treatment around the year for best results. Ivermectin and Pyrantel pamoate are the two active ingredients present in the treatment. Ivermectin kills heartworm larvae which your tyke might have picked in the previous month after taking the heartworm treatment. The other thing about this ingenious treatment is that it is also an effective dewormer that kills and protects dogs from roundworms and hookworms. Sentinel Spectrum Sentinel Spectrum is an oral heartworm preventive treatment that does not contain Ivermectin. So if your doggy is hypersensitive to ivermectin you can administer sentinel spectrum as it contains Milbemycin oxime which protects dogs from heartworm prevention. It is a monthly treatment which comes in chewable, flavored tablet form. It is recommended to give this heartworm preventive to dogs that are at least 4 weeks of age and over 2 lbs of body weight. The difference between Heartgard and Iverhart is that Iverhart comes in chewable flavored form. But many fussy eaters do not enjoy taking it. Tri-Heart Plus is another generic version of Heartgard Plus consisting of the same ingredients as Heartgard Plus but again it comes in a chewable tablet form.
